Korean is a language spoken by approximately 75 million people worldwide, mainly in North and South Korea. It is the official language of both countries and is also spoken by Korean communities in other parts of the world, such as the United States, Canada, and China.
Korean is a member of the Koreanic language family and has its own unique alphabet called Hangul. The language is known for its complex grammar and honorifics system, which reflects the hierarchical nature of Korean society.
The primary examination body for the Korean language is the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Ministry of Education of South Korea. NIIED is responsible for administering the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), which is the official Korean language proficiency test used to assess non-native speakers’ Korean language skills. TOPIK is designed to measure a person’s reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities and is recognized by many universities, employers, and immigration agencies worldwide.
